A wonderful tub chair of walnut likely imported into the UK from Belgium/France in early 20th century. The spare, sinewy style is looking ahead to modern times which would be devoid of so many carvings and fiddly bits that were the fashion in chairs of periods past. It is a beautiful form and it's original upholstery (shown bottom of last image) was velvet strie over horsehair stuffings with cotton traditionally stitched over 8-way handtied springs. It also shows an unusual style of upholstering over the back and side rails instead of keeping them hidden by outer upholstery, as is shown in the top image of same picture done in chinoiserie tapestry and seen in an antique shop during a recent trip to New Orleans LA. This frame sold in it's wood restored/refinished state, but not reupholstered. Inquiries welcome for the cost of traditional reupholstery or take to your favorite workroom.
